Asterisk: DAHDI with X100P Clone (Ambient MD3200)

Preamble

I've recently came across a very cheap internal dial-up modem on Mercado Livre. It cost me the equivalent of about five American Dollars. Upon further research (before buying it, obviously), I've found little to no information on the Ambient MD3200 chipset, but I found out it could be used as a X100P/X101P card on Asterisk, thus providing my server with an FXO port.

This article aims to document some of my findings while researching the inner workings of my D816 PABX. While several versions exist for all those models, the general operational principles are, more or less, the same.

Panasonic KX-TD816 serial port shenanigans

TD816/TD1232 are equipped with one/two serial port(s). This primarily serves the SMDR facility, which records outside calls (and, probably, whatever calls you want to record, the manual is extensive and I don't know for sure.) However, the RS232C port can also be used for remote programming.

I've bought this small PBX for my office. While not exactly needed, it can still be useful for a thing or two. This page compiles knowledge and information on this unit that I've been collecting around.

Panasonic KX-TD816BX Hardware Insights

Overview

This system got no more than a few hundred KB's of RAM. System configuration is stored on a EEPROM (I mean... is it? Couldn't confirm). The CPU is a m68k chip (yeah, same as Macintosh computers and several embedded devices of the era). This unity got the TMP68301AF-12 variant of that chip, manufactured by Toshiba.
